The Large Hadron Collider

Or “LHC”.  Heard of it?  No?  Then get out of that cave you’ve been living in and check out these pictures.  If you have, then you’re either:

a) indifferent,

b) excited, or

c) filled with dread.

If you’re (c), then this video might well describe your feelings about the LHC:

However, if you’re (b) or even (a), then you might find this video both informative and entertaining:

I found the video courtesy of comments on this article at slashdot.org.  Many of the other comments are hilarious too.  I’ll bet you never knew that nerds could be so funny.

Some examples:

“This thing is going to kill us all.”

by Gromius on Saturday August 02, @10:06AM

Look I’ve never understood what the LHC is going to kill us all thing. I’m a physicist working on the CMS experiment so perhaps I can explain what we are going to do more clearly. All we plan to do is take two proton beams or ‘streams’ and then cross them. Why is everybody so worried?

Don’t cross the streams

Dr. Egon Spengler: There’s something very important I forgot to tell you.
Dr. Peter Venkman: What?
Dr. Egon Spengler: Don’t cross the streams.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Why?
Dr. Egon Spengler: It would be bad.
Dr. Peter Venkman: I’m fuzzy on the whole good/bad thing. What do you mean, “bad”?
Dr. Egon Spengler: Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.
Dr Ray Stantz: Total protonic reversal.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Right. That’s bad. Okay. All right. Important safety tip. Thanks, Egon.

Or how about this reaction to the photographs?

What is the condition called where you become sexually aroused by technology?
Well… that’s what I’ve got.
These images set the mind on fire!

Oops, that’s the stuff that gets you there. What I meant to say was C!@L!$

Let me guess… it’s giving you a hadron?

  2. Dread is my emotion but I am an apocalyptic kind of girl.

  3. i was thrilled to be flipping through the pics while listening to REM tell me the end is near! No dread for this geek chick! Beauty in them thar explorations… inner space holds as many answers as outer space, and sometimes you gotta bust up a few particles to see what up, homey!

love the comments, too “gave you a ‘hadron'”? brilliant!

  4. Come on apocalypse. I’ve had my eyes on some plump neighbors that would do very nicely with canned baby potatos and carrots.

  5. Funny how uncle keith’s icon worked out to be the “hungry, worried monster”. perfect!
