Song Lyric Thursday – It’s a Mad World

Is this really it? The fabled “end of days”? If it isn’t it certainly is the weirdest confluence of events in recent memory.

The worldwide economic melt down has taken the peak oil story off the front page and put it solidly on the back burner.  As Jim Kunstler has written, this doesn’t mean that the era of cheap oil energy is about to be extended.  On the contrary.  There is a reckoning a-coming.

The global warming debate rages on.  The debate is still about 1) whether or not global warming or climate change is even occurring (other than the natural cycle) and, 2) whether or not any change is anthropogenic, that is human-induced.

Now I read this.  The absence of aurora borealis in our winter skies has been very noticeable both last year and this.  But this story is truly chilling.  If our planet’s atmosphere is ripped away, can our technology and ingenuity save us?

I doubt it.

Today’s Song Lyric Thursday is all about a sense of hopelessness.  Mad World was composed and recorded originally by Tears for Fears.

Mad World

Music and Lyrics by Tears for Fears

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places
Worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going no where
Going no where
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression
No expression
Hide my head I wanna drown my sorrow
No tomorrow
No tomorrow
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it’s a very very
Mad world
Mad world
Mad world
Mad world
Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday
Happy birthday
And to feel the way that every child should
Sits and listen
Sits and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me
No one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what’s my lesson
Look right through me
Look right through me
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you
‘Cos I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it’s a very very
Mad world
Mad world
Mad World
Mad world
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you
‘Cos I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it’s a very very
Mad world
Mad world
Enlarging your world
Mad world

Personally, I prefer the cover by Gary Jules which was featured on the soundtrack of the now cult classic film Donnie Darko.  This clip is the original music video and not the one associated with the film.

**Annie just reminded me that she featured this tune in a post for Remembrance Day on November 11th.  Just in case you realize that you’ve heard this before.

  1. That was an interesting film. I didn’t think I liked it till the end, and it was perfect.

  2. We are overdue for the magnetic pole to shift from north to south. I hope that’s what’s going on, or we could very well end up like Mars. Scary stuff.

  3. Hmmm, perfect lyrics for this time of the year as well. They should play that in the shopping malls and forget Boney M …
