Managing Stress

We all have some stress in our lives, don’t we? Often we’ll have as much stress as we permit ourselves to have. Personally, I’ve managed to become quite good at not letting things stress me. This “Meh, whatever.” attitude sometimes borders dangerously on apathy.

If you’re under stress, perhaps these tips for stress management from the National Safety Council might help:

Who’s at risk?

Who isn’t at risk? We’re all leading more hectic lives, balancing work, family, education, social obligations, etc. Stress can lead to anxiety, depression, and bad habits – like smoking, excessive drinking, overeating – that take a toll on our health. Chronic stress can wear down your cardiovascular, immune, and gastrointestinal systems.

Kick back and take in these stress relief tips:

  • Ask yourself what stresses you out. Identifying your personal stressors is the first step towards coping with them.
  • Make more of life with less. Cut back on your activities, and get rid of the material things that clutter your life.
  • Talk about it. Friends, family, co-workers, church and other support groups can help you work through your stress and find solutions.
  • Get moving! Studies show that exercise is a great stress reliever.
  • Eat, sleep and be stress-free. A healthy diet and a good night’s sleep go a long way towards managing stress.
  • Adjust your attitude. Change what you can, and accept what you can’t.
  • Keep it in perspective. Ask yourself, “Is this really a matter of life or death, or does it just seem like it right now?”
  • Make time for yourself. Set aside some quiet time to read, meditate, or even take a nap.
  • Make time for others. Volunteer work can help you forget your own problems and boost your self-esteem.
  • Get help if you need it. There’s nothing wrong with seeing a therapist if you can’t cope with stress on your own.
