Song Lyric Thursday

In the excitement leading up to the long holiday weekend last week, I completely forgot to post a “Song Lyric Thursday”. (Actually, it was more like the “running around like a chicken with it’s head cut off” thing as we hurried to get everything together, packed up and loaded up in the truck so we could depart on some semblance of a scheduled time.)

As we travelled this past weekend, we listened to our iPods; first mine and then Ann’s. Ann had recently posted about an old tune from the ’70’s called “Afternoon Delight” and she expressed a desire to hear more of those tunes. I have a – now – edited collection of Billboard Top 100 mp3’s from the ’70’s and ’80’s on one of my computers and she had helped herself to many of them and had them on her iPod.

So we cruised through the Rocky Mountains while simultaneously cruising down our respective memory lanes. Honestly, I can’t really recall a single song worthy of being mentioned here. But I do recall that in the late ’70’s I was listening to Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers quite a bit. So, here’s one from “Damn the Torpedoes”:

Refugee

(by Tom Petty)

We got somethin’ we both know it
We don’t talk too much about it
Yeah it ain’t no real big secret all the same
Somehow we get around it
Listen it don’t really matter to me baby
You believe what you want to believe
You see you don’t have to live like a refugee

Somewhere, somehow somebody
Must have kicked you around some
Tell me why you wanna lay there
And revel in your abandon
Listen it don’t make no difference to me baby
Everybody’s had to fight to be free
You see you don’t have to live like a refugee
Now baby you don’t have to live like a refugee

Baby we ain’t the first
I’m sure a lot of other lover’s been burned
Right now this seems real to you
But it’s one of those things
You gotta feel to be true

Somewhere, somehow somebody
Must have kicked you around some
Who knows, maybe you were kidnapped
Tied up, taken away and held for ransom
It don’t really matter to me
Everybody’s had to fight to be free
You see you don’t have to live like a refugee
I said you don’t have to live like a refugee
